Our studio is at Eccles House in Hope, in the Hope Valley, which puts us about half an hour from Sheffield, an hour from Nottingham, and within easy reach of most of Derbyshire and the wider East Midlands. We have been building websites for owner-managed businesses since 2003, most of them within driving distance.
Does local matter for a website? Honestly, less than local firms usually claim. The work itself can be done from anywhere, and plenty of good agencies work entirely remotely. But there are three things proximity genuinely changes, and they are worth knowing about.
The first is the discovery conversation. The most valuable hour of any website project is the one where somebody sits with you and asks awkward questions about how you actually win work. Some of that surfaces on a video call. More of it surfaces sitting in your office, seeing the whiteboard, meeting the person who answers the phone, and noticing the three things that never make it into a brief. For businesses with a physical operation — a workshop, a showroom, a site — being able to walk round it changes what we can write about you.
The second is photography and proof. Owner-managed businesses win work on trust, and trust comes from real faces, real premises and real jobs, not stock imagery. Being nearby makes it practical to organise a proper shoot rather than making do with whatever is on someone's phone.
The third is accountability. There is a particular kind of care that comes from working with people you might run into. It should not matter and it does.
What does not change is the work itself. Bespoke website design rather than a theme. A structure built around your services and how your customers decide. Copy written to answer real questions. A site you own outright, on a platform you can leave, with a content management system you can actually use. And, where it earns its place, marketing automation behind it so enquiries get answered instantly rather than whenever someone checks the inbox.
The businesses we work with locally tend to look similar in shape rather than sector: between two and fifty people, an owner or a small team making the decisions, selling something considered rather than impulse, and winning most work through reputation and referral. Manufacturers, professional services, specialist trades, consultancies, training providers. What they usually have in common when they call us is a website that describes them accurately and persuades nobody.
Local search is worth a paragraph, because it is the practical benefit people ask about. If your customers search with a place name — "accountant Chesterfield", "engineering Sheffield", "solicitor Buxton" — then a few things matter more than they do nationally. A Google Business Profile that is complete and actively used. Consistent name, address and phone number everywhere you appear online. Genuine reviews, gathered continuously rather than in a panic. And pages that talk about the places you actually serve, written properly rather than spun into fifty near-identical location pages, which search engines have been discounting for years.
We build that groundwork in as standard: structured data describing your business and location, sensible page structure, fast loading, and a site that works properly on a phone, which is where most local searches happen.
If you are in Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire or Leicestershire and you are thinking about a new website, or you have one that is not producing enquiries, the useful next step is a conversation rather than a proposal. We will ask about how you win work now, what a client is worth to you, and what has and has not worked before — and tell you honestly whether we are the right fit.
